router questions

Few questions (since I know a bunch of you know your routers).

I just got a router and haven't even got a bit for it (btw, what bits should I get as a minimum?)

Anyway, I would like to sink some switchs into the side of my cabinet (they are cool switches I got from a government action and using for power). Anyway, I need to sink them about 1/4 inch if I put them in the side (where they will be easy to get to). But I've never used the router before (will play with it first) but can you do it horizontally without danger of over drilling? Anything I should watch out for?
