It doesn't matter really unless you are going to have 2 or 4 joysticks on the arcade controller. But I'm guessing you only have one, so I suggest usb just cause it's easier, and USB usually automatically installs, no restart hassling with gameports. But if you want an easier route I'd suggest getting the sidewinder gameport version off of www.computergeeks.com for 5 bucks, then finding a tutorial online about how to wire to the test holes on the pcb board, very easy and sidewinders work great for almost all games in mame (some 4-way games use 4-way controllers, look way back for more explanation on those, but just ignore this comment cause it will only confuse you.)
Good Luck, I should have pictures of my gamepad by the end of the week and it's a very good layout I must say, works well for neo geo games, and fighting games.
