Question for anyone who has painted their entire cabinet

I am using a BLACK Killer Instinct cabinet but there is a spot on one of the sides that has some wear to it so I have decided to repaint the whole thing. What is the material used on the sides of arcade cabinets that gives them that black, professional look? Is it some kind of paint? Just curious because I wanted to repaint my machine, but I don't want it to be cheap like I've seen on a lot of homemade cabinets. Then again, if it isn't paint, what kind of material is it? It looks to be the same stuff that is used on ping-pong tables.
