there is a thread on this on the mame.net message board, what i have gathered from there is that the picture is much better through a scan converter then with something throwin into a card. the one recommended that i have seen was the TView Gold2 converter, i had also looked up an article on ZDNet that proclaimed this one was much much better then any other consumer offering for a scan converter (apparently they can reach up to 5000+ for true broadcast quality)

http://www.focusinfo.com/products/tview_gold/tview_gold.htm

from the specs on that converter it does look heads and tales above the rest at that price range, 150-200$ apparently these can be found on ebay for as little as 50$ and new around 150$-200 depending on the store. personally i plan on picking up one, i have owned a nvidia card with tv out and it was subpar, its a bit better on my current ati radeon aiw, but i want even better then that for an arcade cabinet. also one other advantage is that you dont need a special video card for it to work in dos at all, it just works, and you can get all of the funky resolutions you woudnt get with a normal tv out in windows.

to anyone else reading this if im wrong feel free to correct me or add your own comments/experiances.

: I was wondering if scan converters are a good option for a MAME cabinet using a TV.
: How does this compare to using an ATI gfx card with TV-out?

: Thanks.
