Isn't just normal bearing lubricating oil / gel sufficient?

I think you can get some of these things at auto parts stores.

I'm not sure if using the same kind of oil that you would see used on "hair cutters" would work (NOT hair spray, but the lube stuff..). I know my trackball has some sort of lubricating fluid on the bearings.
