Makes plenty of sense now! Thanks for the info. I guess the encoder must read only one command at a time (ex. not a combination of the left & up together for a diagonal command)so the relay would not work! thanks

: : I am getting ready to build my first MAME cabinet, I have seen some issues talking about where a 4 way joystick is better than a 8 way and vice versa.
: : I am planning on using the Happs Super "8" joystick, and was wondering why a 120 volt relay(s) using a toggle switch couldn't be used to switch off the diagonal leads going to the i-pac board I am planning on using, instead of physically undoing the adapter to switch back to 4 way mode. Has anyone tried this or see any problems with the idea?

: Yes. I see two problems with that idea.
: 1...There are no diagonal leads.
: 2...There are no diagonal leads.

: Yes I know technically this is just one problem but it is such a major one I thought it should be mentioned twice. :o)

: There are only up,down, left and right directions. To go up-left, up and left are both pressed.
