No, I don't think that's what it means... You said you were going to switch off diagonal leads; I think it was assumed you thought there were eight switches.

The encoder must still be able to read more than one signal at a time, for diagonals as well as buttons (Zangief etc.) So if somehow the relay can specifically ignore combinations of NE, SE, SW, NW, then you would indeed be set.

I know nothing of electronics, but it sounds like a slightly more advanced project...
