8 way joystick to 4 way (or 2 way) in about 20 seconds...maybe

After nixing my plans to electronically switch a 8 way joystick to a 4 way (still not trying to have both on my board, not cost, just really trying to keep it minimal) I was wondering about making a removable "gate" insert that would go around my 8 way joystick from the side and fasten to the top and physically limit its travel to either 4 way or 2 way, kinda like a cross routed into Lexan (or other material) with the cross opening being close to the same width as the joystick shaft width, and being open on the end to slide onto the shaft sideways, for a 2 way stick simply a slot. I am sure after heavy use it would wear but they would be cheap and easy to make new ones, even maybe out of something durable and slick like UHMW plastic. Maybe even something that looks cool out of a diffrent colored plastic as decoration. The construction for me would be very easy as I am a cabinet maker by trade, but would this "feel" right while playing games??
Any input is definetly appreciated.
