I recently hacked a USB sidewinder and I agree it was not easy but I did succeed. I found that if you scraped the black material off and exposed the metal, and then put a drop of solder on the contact BEFORE trying to solder the wire to it, it was much easier. In fact I did not have a single solder problem once I figured out to do it that way. I am probably going to hack another one, and this one I will drill holes next to the contact points and insert the wires through the bottom of the board and solder them that way to make the solder points stronger.
