Question regarding mouse x/y axis use for 2 player games (Ikari Warrior)

I am looking for information on using Happs optical rotary joysticks to achieve the rotation in games such as Ikari Warrior and Heavy Barrel, using the mouse's x-axis for player 1 and the y-axis for player 2 (or any other way it can be achieved for 2 players). It appears that this was an issue a couple of years ago, but I can't find anything current on it. From what I have found, Mame was recompiled as Optimame to allow for the x/y split, but I can't find a version (new or old) of Optimame anywhere (I'm guessing it's no longer done). Does Mame now support the x/y split or 2 mice or anything like that to accomplish the rotation for 2 players, or will I need to become a proficient c programmer and compile my own version?

Thanks.
