Hooking up controlls to a Genesis controller.

I am a newbie and would like to start this hobby off by building a cabinet and use my Genesis, because it seems like it would be just like hooking up a tv with the Genesis. The only thing I want to know is how to get the the controlls for it. If there is something on this site or another site can you you tell me.
