: Ideally you want your 4-way stick to move completely freely but only register 4 directions (just like real arcade games). For instance Donkey Kong does not have "restrictor plates", it "feels" the same as an 8-way, it just registers only the 4-ways. So the plates are nice but its not exactly the same as a true 4-way.

: : Some 8way sticks that adjust to 4way have a removable restictor plate on the back, the problem is you have to disassemble the whole stick to change it. Most 8way sticks that claim to change to 4way keep 2 switches from being pushed at the same time but they don't restrict the actual movement of the stick.
