I had a problem one time with direct x 8 where a game killed my install and wired things like what you describe with mame were a result. i had to get direct x buster ( a program to uninstall dx) to remove it and reinstall and all my probs were fixed. just thought i would add that in case its not your sound drivers....make sure to chk it out if you are always installing/uninstalling pc games on your system...and if you cant find dx buster just search "direct x uninstall" in gogle or whatever theres 2 or 3 other programs (all freeware) that do it...
