It still wouldn't give you full 4-way compatibility. I'm not totally sure how serial keyboards work but one of 3 things is going to happen. 1. If you hit diagonal it is still going to send a keystroke and it could be one of two directions you never know which. 2. It will cancel the signal which could be bad if you hit a for example left with a slight up. 3. When multiple key strokes are sent it intreprets the keystrokes as one. thus ghosting to something goofy. Thats why I personally don't think this solution is good. But if you can make it work prove me wrong and I'll stick one in mine.
