I chose the universal joysticks because of their short shafts -- and wish I hadn't. It's next to impossible to play 4 way games with them when they are in 8 way mode, and it's an unbelieveable pain to switch them from 4 to 8 way. If I had to do it over again I would choose differently (although I am not sure what I would choose...)

As for button layout, check the pic below and my website. I put 2 buttons on the left of the joystick and three on the right. This was done for a number of reasons:

The 2 buttons on the left can serve as move buttons in games such as galaga, space invaders, etc. The user can use the joystick if they prefer.

For games that require a joystick and have one or two buttons, this configuration allows for ambidextrous (sp?) play. (like 1943 for fire and loop) You can control the joystick with either hand.

For games that require 3 buttons, players must use the joystick with their left hand.

...and finally, since I have a five button control panel, asteroids can be played! The beauty of asteroids is that even though the score might be on the side of the monitor, the game can still be played.
: Hi all...getting ready to order final parts & pieces for my cocktail mame project and I'm looking for some advice on which joystick to use.

: Also curious to know button setup for those of you who have made a cocktail project if anyone doesn't mind.
