: I'm wondering what people think is most useful or important in a keyboard encoder, to have a lot of discreet inputs to hook up many things, or to have it reconfigurable from software once its' wired up to change the key assignments?

: Is there anything that can be lived without? I initially think having reprogrammable keys sounds convenient but I think, how often would I need that option once it's all set up?

One of the most important aspects of any keyboard encoder is its matrix, and how many keys can it detect being pressed at once.

I personally would go for volume over configurability, as most software will let you reconfig what keys do what anymore.
